In this last sermon in a series looking at the Scriptural bases for our membership vows, we consider a second aspect of the 5th vow,

Do you submit yourselves to the government and discipline of the church, and promise to study its purity and peace?

While last week we looked at the idea of submitting to the church’s authority, this week we look at how Matthew 18:15-20 spells out our responsibility as members to “go get each other” when we “go off the reservation.” I’m referencing one of Robert Redford’s lines inĀ Spy Game (not sure why the 5th vow and spy movies stick together in my head…) where Redford warns Pitt’s character that if he “goes off the reservation” the Agency won’t come for him; in the church that is exactly the opposite of what we’re vowing to do: be involved in going to bring each other back if we go off the rails.
