Paul presents the good news that God has come into the world to redeem the nations as a mystery. And he uses that word over and over; but why? Because what Paul is saying about God is different from what the Ephesians have encountered in any religion they have been exposed to: he is saying that the good news he is presenting about God is that God does not simply identify with a tribe (or ethnicity or nation) like the gods the Ephesians were used to: Gentiles do not become Jews to be “in”; rather Gentiles and Jews together become God’s People, not a new tribal identity, but an identity which transcends tribalism as it calls the whole creation to it’s restored glory.
